The University of Texas at Dallas supports the Ashbel Smith Professorship. Dr. Ashbel Smith was the first president of the UT System Board of Regents. He had a long and distinguished career in medicine, education and public service. During his term on the Board of Regents, Smith was dedicated to recruiting the best faculty members available and to developing a curriculum befitting a “university of the first class.” Smith became known as both the “father of Texas medicine” and the “father of The University of Texas.”

I began my journey at UT Dallas as a PhD student in 1999, and it is a tremendous honor to now be named an Ashbel Smith Professor. The research of Huseyin Cavusoglu MS’03, PhD’03 lies at the intersection of economics and information systems. Specifically, he focuses on the economic implications of emerging information technologies and technology artifacts.
Cavusoglu’s research is aimed at understanding the value that information technologies (IT) can create for firms, customers and business networks; articulating how power relationships among market participants are affected; and identifying the social implications for policymakers. His research portfolio consists of inquiries within two domains: the economics of information security and the economics of IT-enabled transformation.
His research studies have been published in numerous academic journals, including Management Science, Operations Research, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Production and Operations Management, INFORMS Journal on Computing, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, INFORMS Decision Analysis, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Management Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and International Journal of Electronic Commerce, among others.
In addition to his journal publications, his research papers have appeared in dozens of conference proceedings. He has received several best-paper awards and nominations at prestigious information systems conferences, including the International Conference on Information Systems and the Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems.
Cavusoglu joined The University of Texas at Dallas in 2006. Prior to that he was an assistant professor in the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University for three years. In addition to his graduate degrees from UT Dallas, he holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul.
