Mary Fan Kain created the chair in March 2005 to honor her late husband, Dr. John Forrest Kain, who held the Cecil Green Chair for Science in Society at UT Dallas. Sul filled the position in June 2016. The professorship supports the research and scholarly activities of the chair holder in the field of economics.
“As an applied econometrician, I have tried to follow the three research principles. First, do not believe previous theories and claims proposed by others. Second, do not believe yourself either. Finally, just try to listen to your data. Eventually the data will tell you the truth.”
Dr. Donggyu Sul, who specializes in panel data econometrics, joined the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences in 2009 and has served as director of the economics PhD program since 2015. He teaches graduate and undergraduate course in econometrics, which applies statistical and mathematical theories to economics to test hypotheses and forecast future trends. His main research topic is analyzing co-movements among panel, or longitudinal, data.
Sul’s articles have been published in Econometrica, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Business, Economics and Statistics and other major research journals.
He earned a PhD in economics from The Ohio State University in 1992. Immediately after receiving his doctorate, he returned to his home country of Korea to fulfill a five-year mandatory military service requirement. In 1997, Sul went back to Ohio State as a visiting scholar with a research focus in international finance. He changed his field to econometrics in 1999 after joining the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where he worked with Dr. Peter C.B. Phillips, a leading theoretical econometrician. Since then, the two have published numerous papers together.
Sul became co-editor of International Economic Journal in 2016. In addition, he served as associate editor of New Zealand Economic Papers from 2004 to 2006. He was co-organizer of the New Zealand Econometric Study Group Meetings and organizer of the Korean Econometric Camp from 2012 to 2015.
